Relaxing Holidays: Gold Coast Holiday Apartments For Tourists In Mermaid Beach Australia

Queensland’s Gold Coast City (Queensland in Australia) is a top rated vacation destination for holiday makers from all parts of the world. This short article reviews a few of the attractions of the resort, and looks at some of the historical connections of the area. It also looks at two Gold Coast Holiday Apartments in the Mermaid Beach suburb which anyone visiting the area might consider staying in.

Gold Coast City is a resort area in the south eastern part of the state of Queensland. The state capital, Brisbane, lies just to the north beyond the Albert River. To the east is the Pacific Ocean, and to the west are the mountains of Australia’s Great Dividing Range. The area called the Gold Coast Hinterland, which is popular with walker and bushwhackers is in the foothills of this range, and is a World Heritage Site (Lamington National Park protects this area). The coastline of Gold Coast city stretches for about 55 kilometres from the Albert River southwards towards the New South Wales border.

As a tourist destination the Gold Coast is noted for its sunny, sub-tropical climate and for its long, surfing beaches. The area also has six hundred kilometres of waterways and canals, and many holiday accommodations can be found along the banks of these features.

As well as surfing and swimming other sporting pastimes such as golf and tennis are popular with holidaymakers. There are forty golf courses in the area, and many hotels and apartment complexes have sports facilities such as tennis courts. There are also four national sports teams based in Gold Coast: ice hockey, rugby league, basketball and football (soccer).

The Mermaid Beach suburb is named after a British ship, HMS Mermaid. John Oxley, the explorer, landed here in 1823. He also discovered the nearby Brisbane and Tweed rivers.

Oxley was the first European to land here, but he had been preceded by a couple of other explorers. The first was Captain James Cook in 1770. Cook sailed past the Gold Coast in that year, and he named a pair of local landmarks, Point Danger and Mount Warning. Thirty two years later Matthew Flinders also sailed past. His job was to chart the coast north of the British colony in New South Wales.

Nowadays the area is more popular with holiday makers than with explorers and there are many hotels and apartment complexes. Low rise apartment complexes set in attractive grounds, or alongside canals or the beach are very popular with many visitors, including families with children.

One option for visitors is the Mermaid’s Turtle Beach Apartments. This is a low rise complex with air conditioned and self contained apartments set in landscaped tropical gardens. Turtle Beach Apartments are 400 metres from the beach, and two kilometres from the Pacific Fair Shopping Centre. Sports facilities at these apartments include swimming, tennis, a gymnasium, golf (putting greens), and of course there are many full size golf courses nearby wherever you are in Gold Coast. For relaxation there are numerous pools and spas, and a sauna.

Shaz Maisons Mermaid Beach is a close by alternative. This is another low rise complex, in a Mediterranean style of architecture. It is close to many beaches, the closest (lifeguard patrolled Nobby Beach) is only fifty metres away. Lively nightlife, Jupiter’s Casino and the Pacific Fair Centre are all close to Shaz Maisons.
