Gold Coast City is a resort area in the south eastern part of the state of Queensland. The state capital, Brisbane, lies just to the north beyond the Albert River. The Mermaid Beach suburb is named after a British ship, HMS Mermaid. John Oxley, the explorer, landed here in 1823. He also discovered the nearby Brisbane and Tweed rivers.
Oxley was the first European to land here, but he had been preceded by a couple of other explorers. The first was Captain James Cook in 1770. Cook sailed past the Gold Coast in that year, and he named a pair of local landmarks, Point Danger and Mount Warning. Thirty two years later Matthew Flinders also sailed past. His job was to chart the coast north of the British colony in New South Wales.
